Contest Bases for the EFL Activity Design Contest

The English Department of MINEDUCYT, in collaboration with Teachers Up, is pleased to announce the EFL Activity Design Contest.

Contest Objective

The contest aims to inspire teachers nationwide to design engaging, high-quality activities for young English learners at the basic English level (PreA1 to A1). The focus is on enhancing speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Categories

Participants are invited to submit activities in any of the following categories, each with its own specific guidelines.

Speaking

Objective: Design engaging speaking activities that encourage learners to improve their pronunciation and interaction with their peers.

A. Pronunciation Activities

Objective: Help students improve pronunciation, focusing on accuracy, fluency, and confidence.

Examples: Phonetic card games, tongue twisters, shadowing exercises, minimal pairs practice, or accent and intonation drills.

Criteria: Alignment with common pronunciation challenges, creativity, focus on individual sounds and rhythm, and building students’ confidence.

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. Videos (e.g., shadowing exercises, pronunciation drills)
  2. Audio recordings (e.g., minimal pairs, tongue twisters)
  3. WORD/PDF (with detailed activity instructions, scripts, or visuals)
  4. Interactive Audio Tools (interactive pronunciation quizzes, for example, Google Forms or Quizlet, where students listen to sounds or words and select the correct pronunciation. You can submit links to these interactive resources.)
  5. Apps and Platforms (Using apps like Flipgrid or Vocaroo, you can create audio-based pronunciation activities where students listen, repeat, and get feedback. Links to these online exercises can be submitted.)

B. Conversation Activities

Objective: Provide opportunities for students to engage in simple conversations using English.

Examples: Structured conversations, role-play scenarios, conversation starters, or board games.

Criteria: Encouragement of student interaction, relevance to real-life situations, adaptability to basic proficiency levels, and incorporation of cultural or current topics.

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. Videos (e.g., role-play scenarios)
  2. Audio recordings (e.g., sample conversation exchanges)
  3. WORD/PDF (e.g., conversation scripts)
  4. Interactive Slides or Docs ( with conversation starters, prompts, and images to guide students during the activity. Slides can also include embedded audio clips or videos.)
  5. Digital Collaboration Tools: (Padlet or Flipgrid to record conversations)
Listening

Objective: Create activities to help students improve their listening comprehension with various audio resources.

Examples: Audio quizzes, fill-in-the-gap exercises, “spot the difference” after listening, or comprehension questions for short stories.

Criteria: Use of authentic or level-appropriate audio, creativity, effectiveness in improving comprehension, and alignment with specific listening skills (e.g., listening for details).

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. Audio recordings (e.g., audio examples of conversations or interviews with comprehension questions)
  2. WORD/PDF (with instructions and questions)
  3. Interactive formats (e.g., Google Forms, Edpuzzle, Quizlet, or similar tools for listening activities that include embedded audio with questions. You can submit links to these interactive formats.)
  4. LiveWorkSheets (to create interactive worksheets that students can complete as they listen to an audio. You can submit links to these resources.)
Writing

Objective: Encourage young learners to practice and develop their writing skills.

Examples: Journal basic prompts, structured letter-writing, descriptive sentences, basic guided creative writing tasks, or comic strip creation.

Criteria: Age and level appropriateness, variety in writing forms, alignment with grammatical and vocabulary goals, and creativity.

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. WORD/PDF/Google Docs (detailed documents that include writing prompts, instructions, templates, and rubrics for assessing written work)
  2. Slides (e.g., with structured writing activities, breaking down each task step-by-step. These slides can include prompts, writing tips, and visuals to guide students through the process.)
  3. Online Writing Tools (Google Docs to create collaborative writing activities, where students can write and receive real-time feedback. You can submit templates or links to these online documents.)
  4. Interactive Worksheets (LiveWorkSheets for students to type and submit their work. You can submit links to these tools.)
  5. Video Instructions (You can record yourself demonstrating how to complete a writing task.)
Reading

Objective: Strengthen reading comprehension and vocabulary through simple texts.

Examples: Reading comprehension, “predict what happens next” exercises, or matching vocabulary with definitions.

Criteria: Relevance to language level, fostering analytical and critical thinking, vocabulary expansion, and integration of various text types (stories and dialogues).

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. WORD/PDF/Google Docs (reading comprehension activities in a document format, including short texts (stories, dialogues, etc.) and comprehension questions)
  2. Slides (a short reading passage and interactive questions that students can answer while reading)
  3. Interactive online worksheets
Vocabulary

Objective: Create fun activities to help students learn, recall, and use new vocabulary.

Examples: Word games, crossword puzzles, vocabulary charades, flashcard memory games, or categorization tasks.

Criteria: Fun, memorable, interactive, and context-based vocabulary use.

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. Audio recordings (e.g., audio clips with follow-up exercises)
  2. Videos (with follow-up activities)
  3. Slides (with images, vocabulary items, and embedded audio)
  4. WORD/PDF (with instructions, word lists, and visuals)
  5. Interactive formats (e.g., Google Forms, Google Slides, Kahoot, Blooket, WordWall, or similar tools with embedded vocabulary-related exercises)
Grammar

Objective: Develop grammar-focused activities that help students understand and apply grammar in context.

Examples: Grammar scavenger hunts, sentence completion games, "find the error" exercises, and board games with grammar prompts.

Criteria: Alignment with level-appropriate grammar structures, innovation in explaining concepts, focus on both accuracy and fluency, and contextualized use.

Possible Formats for Submissions:

  1. Videos (grammar-focused role-plays or game instructions)
  2. Slides (explanations/ grammar rules and practice activities)
  3. WORD/PDF (with grammar rules, instructions, examples, practice exercises, and quizzes)
  4. Interactive formats (e.g., Google Forms, Google Slides, Kahoot, Blooket, WordWall, or similar tools on grammar rules and practice)

Eligibility

  1. The contest is open to all English language teachers or specialists currently employed at public and private institutions, including schools, English academies, and universities nationwide, who have an @clases.edu.sv email account.
  2. Each participant may submit up to three activities per category and may participate in up to three categories. Please submit each activity separately, even if they fall under the same category.

Submission Guidelines

  1. Level Requirement: all activities must be designed for PreA1 or A1 learners.
  2. Format: activities should be submitted according to the guidelines described in the Categories section above and must include the following components:
  3. Activity Title
  4. Language Level (PreA1 or A1)
  5. Category (e.g., Speaking, Listening, etc.)
  6. Unit, Week, Class, Content, and Subphase: Aligned with the MINEDUCYT Methodological Guides (e.g., Unit 2, Week 1, Class 1, Classroom Supplies, Pre)

  1. Objectives: Brief description of the activity’s goals and expected outcomes
  2. Materials Needed: List of any required materials (e.g., flashcards, audio files)
  3. Instructions: Step-by-step guidelines for teachers to follow
  4. Estimated Duration: (e.g., 5 or 15 minutes. Please note that its development should not exceed 15 minutes of a subphase in a 45-minute class.)
  1. Language: all activity instructions must be written in English, with simple explanations suitable for basic-level teachers and students.
  2. Originality: submissions must be original, unpublished work. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.

Evaluation Criteria

Each submission will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Creativity and Originality: Uniqueness and innovation in designing engaging activities for basic-level students.
  2. Clarity and Accessibility: Clear, easy-to-understand instructions that match PreA1 or A1 levels.
  3. Pedagogical Value: Alignment with PreA1 and A1 learning goals, including level-appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
  4. Student Engagement: Ability to capture students' interest and promote interaction.
  5. Practicality and Adaptability: Ease of implementation in classroom settings, including those with limited resources.

Prizes and Recognition

  1. Certificates: All participants will receive certificates of participation.
  2. Showcasing of High-Quality Entries: Outstanding entries will be featured and credited in the MINEDUCYT resource library and made available for use by all teachers across El Salvador.
  3. Category Winners: One winner will be selected in each category, totaling six winners, who will receive the following recognitions:
  1. Featured on Teachers Up social media and the MINEDUCYT English Site for English teachers
  2. Invited to deliver a session at a Teachers Up conference or a webinar
  3. Awarded a scholarship for an online course offered by a university in the U.S.

Submission Process

  1. Deadline: All submissions must be received by March 15, 2025 at the latest.
  2. How to Submit: Entries should be submitted via the EFL Activity Design Contest Submission Form.
  3. Confirmation: Participants will receive a confirmation email once their submission has been successfully received.

Judging Panel

The judging panel will include EFL experts with representatives from MINEDUCYT, Teachers Up, and selected English teachers.

Announcement of Winners

  1. Winners will be announced in March 2025, and the results will be shared via Teachers Up social media and the MINEDUCYT English Site for teachers.

Terms and Conditions

  1. In alignment with MINEDUCYT policies, only participants using @clases.edu.sv email accounts are eligible to enter the contest.
  2. By entering the contest, participants grant MINEDUCYT the right to use, publish, and share submitted activities (with proper attribution) in educational materials.
  3. Entries that do not meet all submission guidelines or criteria will be disqualified.
  4. MINEDUCYT reserves the right to modify the content and format of entries if necessary.
  5. MINEDUCYT reserves the right to modify contest terms if necessary.
